Janet McCallum

I make a living designing highly integrated educational books for several  different publishers on a freelance basis but I feel my real creativity comes out in my quilts. Although I work with shape and tone all the time, books are  are very controlled objects and fabric lets me have free rein with texture and colour.

I love colour and pattern and have always collected photos of  patterns in nature. They are a constant source of inspiration. I am rarely short  of ideas but run out of time to execute them before I wish to move on to the next.

In the last few years I have designed 3 sets of quilts for various parts of Salisbury District Hospital and they were made by the Sarum Quilters, one of the groups I belong to. Several have been commissioned by the genetics department and feature the latest fluorescent imaging techniques interpreted in various ways with patchwork.

I work amid organised chaos  with positive feedback from my husband and two cats.
