GROUP QUILT - GRAND CANYON 1 Lynne, Penny, Beverley, Mary
Lynne: I wanted to capture the colour and
grandeur of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA. I started with the idea of a semi-realistic portrayal of it - I had a lot of photos and other images of it, including many typical of the Native American cultures of the
area. I also had seen the David Hockney images of Grand Canyon at the Royal Academy Exhibition in 1999, and included one of these in the source folder sent with the group piece. My two original pieces used fabric
collage, piecing, layering and stitching to create the canyon formations. I used lighter fabrics to give the impression of distance.
Penny: I too had been to the Hockney exhibition
at the Royal Academy. Inspired by this, I cut the piece up into rectangular units. Hockney had made his pieces from multiple boards, and I wanted to give the same impression. I then rearranged the blocks adding some
of my own, made in the same crazy technique I had used in my own piece. I put the top back together adding a quarter inch border around each block. I was very pleased with the result!
Beverley: In Lynne's notes she had included
Native American drawings, so I used an image of an eagle to applique on to the quilt. I also added green circles and textural stitching which carried on the Hockney theme.
Mary: Lynne's piece had already been chopped up
and reassembled, and as I was the last person I added a border. Lynne's file included some Native American designs, so I made stencils from these and played with my newly-acquired Stewart Gill paints. I bought the
striped fabric specially.
Lynne: I was very pleased when I finally saw my
quilt after it had been drastically changed! I added decorative stitching and quilting, additional paint effects, covered several parts with an organza overlay, and added a stitched Zuni sun from my source
material.
INDIVIDUAL QUILT - GRAND CANYON 2
Lynne: I continued and expanded my original
idea of a semi-realistic portrayal of the Canyon. Many images are included from the Hopi, Pueblo and Navajo cultures, and the finished quilt records the fact that these people were the first to know the Grand Canyon
in all its majesty.
