GROUP QUILT - REGENERATION
June, Jackie, Grace, Hilary

June: When I visited the Caleveras State Park in California, I was overwhelmed by the size and endurance of the great Sequoia trees. I learned how fire can destroy and yet be the sours of regeneration. This was the idea behind my two pieces.

Jackie: The fire was the next part of the story, and so I added the flames cutting across the tops of the trees, as well as the red hot burning trunks.

Grace: Because June started with the trees and talked about regrowth, I made an extra piece, and attached it, which showed the burnt trees and the first signs of renewal.

Hilary: This arrived as a more-or-less finished piece. The concept of the forest fire needed more flames. I added flames and, in the bottom left hand corner, some cones of the giant redwood which needed the fire to break down the seed ready to germinate.

June: When the piece came back I was delighted and felt that there was little more to be done, except forquilting it, and adding some textured stitching to give the whole piece some added depth.

INDIVIDUAL QUILT - RENEWAL

June: From the same starting point, I kept my individual piece very linear, like the forest. I also followed the pattern of an individual storm, beginning with the lightning and ending with the blackened trunks against the blue sky. The sentences along the edge briefly tell the story.
