GROUP QUILT - AN ILL WIND BLOWS NO GOOD Jackie, Grace, Hilary, June
Jackie: I began with the thought that all things in nature should be in harmony. Whether you believe in Creation, the Big Bang, or some combination of these, all things in the world evolved from one single entity. Out of the darkness comes light. When light is refracted, you get the colours of the spectrum. These colours were made into a simple flower shape, and this was my starting point.
Grace: My reaction was that this piece was too small and too neat. So I added two borders, and scattered coloured leaves across it. Nature, I felt, is not usually peaceful and nice.
Hilary: I felt rather unequal to the task of
working on this piece, especially finding the irregular shape difficult to work with. I filled in the spaces with small squares in colours that seemed appropriate to the original rainbow.
June: I was pretty drastic with this piece. I
layered colours underneath reflecting the top pattern and stitched in wavy lines a quarter of an inch apart before slashing through the top layers to give a chenille effect.
Jackie: I was rather surprised that the piece
hadn't been cut up - it was what I had planned myself. Also I wasn't happy with the coloured squares, so I covered these up. I then added more petal shapes, and slashed the piece still further.
INDIVIDUAL QUILT - HE SAW THAT IT WAS GOOD
Jackie: I love hand sewing and applique, so my
own quilt was made by hand. I cut up the petal shapes into small pieces, and appliqued them on to a measured-up square, mixing the colours and introducing a few extra tints and flower shapes. For the border, I made
tracings, some from Nancy Pearson's book, and used stitch and tear to construct the flower shapes. I realised that the quilt needed a quiet area, so allowed space between the central small pieces and the border.
