GROUP QUILT - BEHIND THE MASK
Grace, Hilary, June, Jackie

Grace: I thought of body and face decorations, and came across this mask. I used bold, big shapes, and made a three-quarters face. I used the original colours, and then I bonded it on to a painted background.

Hilary: This really worried me. I didn't expect such a large piece with such a definite image. I pinned it on the wall at the top of the stairs so that it looked at me each time I passed. I found the face a little threatening, reminding me of the Native people of North West America. This inspired me to add feathers in two colours on one side of the image and to machine embroider some squirls on the 'cheek' of the face. I feel I was not very adventurous.

June: This amazing face was such a strong image that I felt unable to cut into it. Hilary had added feathers, so I worked on giving it texture with the addition of net and satin stitching over some of the raw edges.

Jackie: I responded to the face image as well, and added some teeth to the mask. I then added further appliqued embroidery over the raw edges.

Grace: I was horrified with the result when it came back. I decided that the only thing to do was to cut the piece up into squares and reassemble it. I then overlaid it with the mask shapes in sheer black fabric. I bound the edges and added machine lettering in the border.

INDIVIDUAL QUILT - THE MASK BEHIND - LAYERS OF ILLUSION

Grace: For my own piece, I first inlaid an L-shaped piece in navy blue to break up the original hard shapes of the mask, and then I inserted extra pieces in black and green, which were designed to give an effect of alternate dark and light colour areas. I enhanced this with the machine quilting, by changing the quilting pattern at every colour change on the quilt surface.
